About this guide
That is the first thing on this page for a reason. A guide that ranks businesses while quietly being one of them is worth nothing, and finding out afterwards is worse than being told up front.
What this guide ranks on
Not star averages. Shops are ordered by how many of their published reviews describe transmission and driveline work, and rebuilds break the ties. Miramar Transmission comes out at number 1 of 17 on that measure.
You should know two things about that at the same time. The count is real — the same word lists run over all 31 shops' reviews, in one function, and the lists are printed in full on the methodology page so you can check them against any shop's reviews yourself. And the people who run the shop at number one are the people who chose what to count.
Both are true. We would rather state them plainly than have you find the second one out on your own.
Why rank on the work instead of the stars
Because a star average is already published in two places, and because it answers a different question. It tells you how customers felt. It does not tell you whether a shop actually does the job you need, or whether it sends that job somewhere else.
Nearly every general repair shop in San Diego will take a transmission. A much smaller number have one apart on a bench this afternoon. That difference is the whole reason someone reads a page like this, and it does not show up in a rating.
If you would rather rank on stars, every shop's page here shows its published rating and review count on each platform, its share of one and two star reviews, and what its customers complain about — ours on exactly the same terms as everyone else's. Nothing is held back, and there is no column we show for competitors and not for ourselves.
Why San Diego only
Search “best transmission shop San Diego” and the pages that come back list shops in San Marcos, Escondido and Oceanside, each with a photo and a paragraph of praise. No counts, no criteria, and no statement of how the list was put together.
An hour's tow is not an alternative to a shop on Miramar Road. The ranked table is San Diego addresses only; shops elsewhere in the county keep full pages and are listed under it.
Corrections
If a figure here is wrong or out of date, it is worth telling us. Ratings and counts change constantly, and we would rather fix a number than defend it. The full method is written out here.
